About

Freshwater ecologist with particular interests in small and ephemeral habitats (turloughs), crustaceans and coleopterans, trained in Ireland, Ghana and Canada. I have published about 200 papers and articles. In the 1960s I worked on developing fish populations in the man-made Volta Lake in Ghana, and in the 1970s on saline lakes in BC (Canada). In Ireland I was a founder member and former Chair of EU Erasmus group on Aquatic Biology. I became involved with research into ecology, aquaculture and diseases of freshwater crayfish, and supervised some 20 postgraduate students. Other interests are conservation biology, origins of the Irish aquatic fauna, biology of eels, and ecology of woodlice in agricultural landscapes.
